Slackel Live KDE 4.14.3

Post by djemos »

Slackel Live KDE 4.14.3 has been released. Slackel is based on Slackware and Salix.

Slackel Live KDE 4.14.3 includes the latest 3.18.11 kernel and latest updates from Slackware's 'Current' tree.

This release is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit architectures with both fitting comfortably within the size of a DVD. Iso images are isohybrid.
The 64-bit iso supports booting on UEFI systems. SecureBoot is however not supported.
The 32-bit flavor supports both i686 PAE SMP and i486, non-PAE capable systems.
Slackel Live KDE 4.14.3 includes the current tree of Slackware and KDE 4.14.3 accompanied by a very rich collection of KDE centric software. Linux kernel is 3.18.11. Firefox 38.0.1esr is the web browser, KMail and Ktorrent are the main networking applications included in this release, followed by Akregator, an RSS reader for KDE, Kopete, the KDE instant messenger and more. It comes also with Openjre-7u79, rhino, icedtea-web,Gparted. Wicd is used for setting up your wired or wireless networking connections.

In the multimedia section Dragon multimedia player, Clementine 1.2.3, K3b 2.0.2 included. The Salix codecs installer application can be used, to quickly and easily install patent encumbered codecs to your system.

A wide variety of office applications are included. Calligra Words, Calligra Stage, Calligra Tables are the main office applications present while there are many more like the Okular document viewer.
On Slackel repositories there is the latest stable LibreOffice version 4.4.5

In the graphics section Gwenview, KColorChooser, KSnapshot.

All the Salix system tools are present to make system administration easy and straight forward. The Gslapt package manager offer access to Slackware, Salix and Slackel package repositories, while Sourcery provides an easy way to interface with the SlackBuilds.org and the package building scripts that it offers. Package update notifications are handled by the non-intrusive Salix Update Notifier application.

The installation can be performed using three different installation modes. A Full mode installation, installs everything included in the installation medium. A Basic mode installation will only include the basic packages that make up the desktop environment, mainly KDE, the collection of Salix System Tools and the Firefox browser, making it ideal for anyone who wants to built a desktop environment with a custom application selection. Finally the Core mode installation which will only install a command line based system, without any graphical environment at all.

Of course, the Slackel Live Installer (SLI) is included, so you can install Slackel Live KDE from within a running live system on your hard drive as well as on a USB stick.

Important change is that SLI (Slackel live installer) now supports (e)lilo or grub boot loaders and also a different partition can be used for /home directory

As usual user can manage partitions through the installer using gparted and also set a password for root and create a new user with password for the installed system. Help appears while user move the mouse on the installer Gui.
There are 16 locales and timezones to choose on boot and options to boot with persistence, with no-pae i486 kernel, pae-smp i686 kernel, boot on command line and more.

If you want to transfer the iso to a USB stick, make sure you read the respective instructions in this file:
http://www.slackel.gr/isos/slackel-live ... ON_USB.TXT

You can also use the dd command to write the iso to a USB stick, but some features like persistence, will not be available.

if you are booting with persistence, the very first time the live system will boot will take a while. This is because the persistence file is created at that point and that is somehow a lengthy process. However, the system will boot much faster at every consecutive boot.
I suggest users to not boot with persistence for the first time.
It is better to use the script to create a persistent file. And in next boot to use persistence.

(The root password for the live CD is “live”. Standard user login is “one” with password: "one")

Hi Dimitris

I just installed your latest Slackel and I am really liking it. I ran into one problem when I couldn't install the vice package from http://salix.hostingxtreme.com/x86_64/14.1 because it lists libjpeg as a dependency.

I have edited the SLKBUILD and included a patch for giflib so that it builds with libjpeg-turbo and installs and runs properly on current. The x86_64 files are here: http://people.salixos.org/timcowchip/vice/current/2.4

I don't have i486 or i686 files yet.

Thanks for all your work on Slackel

Thanks, Tim
A lot of packages have been changed on slackware current.

i know about libjpeg has been replaced by libjpeg-turbo and i had to correct the dep files on slackel repos.
so i will add this package after build the i486 package.

Thank you also for installing the iso.
It looks like the installer is stable and this is good for the future salix live isos too.
Just to remember that the slackel is a testing environment and the work done in it , is used on salix.
:)

Edit: I have changed your email in slackel forum.

To install to a USB stick one has to be root, at least in my case,
since as sudo /sbin, where needed files reside is not in PATH.

I don't understand what you mean. Do the installation from a running salix or slackel or live system.

Read this
http://www.slackel.gr/isos/slackel-live ... ON_USB.TXT
Read it many times.

I cannot install as sudo since installer is looking for files which reside in /sbin.

Code: Select all

$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/home/peter/bin:/usr/lib/kde4/libexec:/usr/lib/java/jre/bin:/usr/lib/qt/bin
/sbin is not there
I could ad it to the PATH or run installation as su.

Code: Select all

# echo $PATH
/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/sbin:/usr/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin
Now /sbin is in the PATH and installation proceeds and is not aborted. All needed files are found.

From a running live system 64bit on virtual box.
one[~]$ echo $PATH
/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/lib64/kde4/libexec:/usr/lib64/java/jre/bin:/usr/lib64/qt/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/sbin:/usr/sbin

there is no such a problem here.
Now i have a new 4GB RAM, i3 on 1.9 GHz, EFI lenovo laptop and i can test on vmware, 32 and 64bit iso images.
Since i can give 2GB memory to vmware, KDE is running fine and is fast and stable. Install multimedia codecs, run the installer, played with kmail, calibra etc .
