Seperate Home Partition

Hi,
I have used Salix OS for a while and I liked it a lot. Switched over to Sabayon once my disk crashed. I now have /home in a separate partition since I don't have to re-download by Dropbox, Downloads, pictures etc. However, I tried to switch over to Salix last week, but I don't see an option in the one page installer to specify a separate partition for /home which is now a mandatory thing for me. The salix installer only allows me to specify the / (root) partition where Salix will be installed.
Is it possible to specify a separate /home partition while installing Salix?
Thanks,
Balaji.

Are using installing from a Live version of Salix using Salix Live Installer (SLI)? If so then yes there is , but I don't recall how right at the moment, will need to do some research. Maybe in the mean time someone else will come forward
with the instructions.

Yes, I beleive it was a 64bit 14.1 live iso that I was using to
install.

Sorry, you are correct, there does not appear to be a way to have a separate
/home partitions on that Live version. I was thinking of the Salix Live Mate
http://forum.salixos.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=6717
This version does allow for separate partitions for
/home. Try that or download one of the installer iso.

while on live
xfce environment, download the new version of installer
sli-1.2.3
then upgrade
with new version
Code: Select all
sudo spkg -u sli-1.2.3-x86_64-1dj.txz
Edit: sli is a front end of slackware-live. Upgrade also
slackware-live-0.4.5
Code: Select all
sudo spkg -u slackware-live-0.4.5-noarch-1dj.txz
And proceed
with installation using a separate home partition.

Hi,
I'm interested into this also. I've downloaded the sli file but when I run:
Code: Select all
sudo spkg -u sli-1.2.3-x86_64-1dj.txz
I get:
Code: Select all
exmachina[Downloads]$ sudo spkg -u sli-1.2.3-x86_64-1dj.txz
Password:
Skipping package sli-1.2.3-x86_64-1dj (package with same base name is NOT installed)...
exmachina[Downloads]$
Is there something I can do here to move forward?
Thanks!

This is for use on a live system, not an installed system. On an installed system, there is no sli package to upgrade. If you want to install it you should use "spkg -i", but it won't do much on an installed system anyway.

Thank you gapan!
Oh man, it would be wonderful if that would work! I've installed Salix live xfce64bit version since it's the only one that would actually work on my laptop. Probably because it has eLILO instead of LILO.
It's a Thinkpad T420 to which I added a 30 Gig SSD for the system. With the normal version I've tried many times and always got boot issues. I even tried the latest Slackware live XFCE from Alien Bob... no go with that either... It halted before loading the live system. This Salix XFCE Live is the only one that works and if I can get the Home partition also set up on the other drive, I'm good to go...
I'll install using the latest sli tomorrow and let you know how that worked... Thanks again!

The mother board on my desktop crashed and hence I could not try with the latest sli package.
As soon as I get a new mother board and have my desktop up and running with Windows, I will install a fresh copy of Salix.
One more thing: Tried Linux Mint 17.2 cinnamon and it is very attractive and performance was very good. Is there a way to install cinnamon on Salix?
Thanks,
Balaji.

Just tried it. I've booted into the Salix XFCE Live 14.1 and installed the new sli. It gave me the options to install the new home partition on the other drive but upon the install it did the same as if it was the old installer. LILO as boot and home partition on the same drive as the system.
It doesn't matter what I choose, GRUB or LILO, format drive or no format - the output is always the same: LILO as boot and /home into the same drive as the system. It's like it's ignoring the options and moves on to install the old installer settings.
Bottom line, it didn't work on the XFCE Live... maybe MATE install works fine, I don't know. Oh well, I tried - I'm sticking with XFCE for now. Just wanted to let you guys know my results. A new Slackware version is right around the corner and that means another Salix is not far down the road. In the meantime I'm good with this.
