SALIX Requirements [Solved]

Post by yoanguila »

Hello, greetings from Córdoba, Argentina.... and... sorry my low english.

I have a question, Salix OS can be used with a very light GUI like a E16, 17... in 4.5Gb HD, Pentium 133MHz and 32Mb Ram??? (32!!, yes is poor)

I can extract HD and install it with my own PC (4Gb Ram, Core 2 Quad Q9550, 1Tb HD), an then put the disk in the old pc.
This HD (4.5Gb) is only to play music in a pub. I was thinking install Clementine Player (uses 27-28mb ram) or XMMS + XMMS-Crossfade plugin (18Mb ram). Total ram installed is 64, but 64 total intalled -27 Music player - 8 video=29Mb ram for the OS i think.
It's possible use it, can work with GUI and 32mb ram???? I like Salix its perfect :!:

My friend from the pub don't know how use MOC, and less... use a console... he is a Windows user, but i cant install WIN98 or Win2000, we haven't 3,5" diskettes... We install DSL but the interface its tedious to use, and we have a lot of problems to compile the plugin for XMMS.

We installed Zenwalk, Vector, Puppy, DSL, SliTaz, BeaFanatIX 2006.2 rev4, Nimblex, and Austrumi and then Htop, show RAM consumption in my pc. but i dont know how to install clementine on puppy or slitaz(both are cool), i havent ADSL, only a 3G modem, so i must try install without web repositories because Slitaz and Puppy don't recognizes my modem...

Slackware and derivates, there are a posibility.

Thanks for read!, and sorry (again) my low english

I don't think running X on such machines will work. My suggestion for a music player: install mpd and control it with a smartphone (android/iphone). This would work on 64 MB.

I don't think there's a way to connect an android phone to a Pentium 133. :D

In any case, running X in such an old system will probably not even work and even if it does, it will be completely unusable. If you absolutely have to use that PC, try a core system, no X and a player like moc or cmus. Your friend will need to learn how to use them.

Another option would be to install FreeDOS and use an mp3 player like DAMP: http://www.damp-mp3.co.uk
A friend of mine had used a similar setup with a Pentium 133 for his restaurant, I think maybe 16MB RAM (or 32MB max) and no hard drive! He loaded FreeDOS from a floppy and it played mp3 files from a CDROM. That PC worked 24/7 for years.

Connect it with LAN to the WLAN router and... voilà ;)

Maybe a *box window manager and xmms only (no gtk2/qt apps!) will work, too. Perhaps add a gtk1 file manager for mp3 drag and drop. A drawback of this solution: lacks utf8 support.

Thanks for the answers... The PC don't have wireless conection...
In the pub he uses crossfade effect, so i was thinking in XMMS or Clementine, i like so much the last...
mmh i'll go to see DSL again but, running another X, like LDXE or E17, DSL recognizes deb packages and Clementine can be downloaded in deb :P, remember my internet conection (only 3G)... and DSL don't detect it, because it uses an old kernell... so i must install manually everything. I will see.

gapan thanks for the link, i will test Damp on Ubuntu with Wine, its an interesting player ;)

Thanks to everybody for the replies

linus72, CTKArchlive or anything based on arch will not even load on that PC. It's a pentium 1, arch is built for i686. A pentium 1 does not support i686 instructions.

yoanguila, you have to be pragmatic. You have an ancient system. There is absolutely no way that clementine, a rather heavy qt-based application will run on top of a desktop environment in graphical mode. 32MB of RAM is probably not enough to load anything except the kernel these days.

You re right!!! the system its so poor in ram, it must have 96mb ram, minimal, for do something.
I'll try SliTaz or DSL

Well... i think my thread is Solved, thanks a lot. ;)
