Most 32-bit packages in slackware (and salix) are compiled with "-O2 -march=i486 -mtune=i686". That means that they are optimized for i686 CPUs but will also work for i486 CPUs. Some packages are compiled with "-O2 -march=i686 -mtune=i686" or the equivalent "-O2 -march=i686". Usually these are multimedia related packages that would never have a change of working on a i468 CPU anyway. Hope that answers your question.
