Newbie with multimedia player problems

Post by punchy71 »

Hi to all,
I am brand new to Salix OS. I have just installed Salox OS Fluxbox edition on my pc and I'm trying to now watch Youtube videos with Flash requirements and they would NOT play so I tried the right click multimedia menu option to download and install missing multimedia codecs. I did this rebooted the pc and I still can NOT watch Youtube Flash videos. How can I download and install Flash?

Also; I tried to open both a .rm and also a .wax stream file with the default Whaaw! Media Player and it won't open that kind of file even after I downloaded and installed missing multimedia codecs. I then tried downloading the files completely and playing them in completed form ( not as a stream) and it still would not play them. Is there another lightweight media player that I could try to download and install that would play these multimedia files and if so, how would I do it?

Thank you

First of all, welcome to Salix!

Have you had a look at the User Guide (link on Salix homepage)? it won't answer all your questions, but definitely some of them (for instance, about package management).

Also, do search the forum, if you haven't already; you may find the answer there.

Use Menu>System>Gslapt Package Manager. Search for flash. Install. Easy Peasy.

As for the media files, vlc (gslapt, again) opens/plays almost every media type known to man :)

But here are a couple of specific URL's to start with:
rm -> http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/ ... using-vlc/
wax -> http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1600428

You might like to try SMPlayer (mplayer front-end).

What I usually do is copying the URL streams from text files (playlist files) and then I am bookmarking them in SMPlayer or VLC or creating a launcher in my root menu.

Code: Select all

		[submenu] (80's) {} <>
			[ToggleCmd {Exec mocp http://64.62.194.11:8095/} {Exec mocp http://64.71.145.130:8095/} {Exec mocp http://72.13.81.178:8095/} {Exec mocp /} {Exec mocp http://72.13.81.237:8095/} {Exec mocp http://72.13.81.246:8097/}] (1.FM - 80s Channel)
			[exec] (Café 80s FM) {mocp http://178.77.100.114:8000/} <>

Thanks for the help. I downloaded and installed VLC media player and rebooted, however, it doesn't show up anywhere in the menu, so how can I find where it went?
