No, but you do need those partitions. Maybe if they're not present, the installer behaves unpredictably, I don't know. However, I believe its normal behaviour is just to wipe everything. That's fine if you just want Windows, but no good for dual booting - which is why you need to create partitions with dual booting in mind. There are many tutorials online on dual booting (for other distros) and though you will probably want to do things your own way, it's useful to see how Gparted works, for instance, if you're not sure. What will be different (probably better and simpler) is the Salix installer.

I think it's quite likely the problem is with the disk itself, as someone suggested above. Try giving it a gentle clean. Also, it could be the disk reader.

One thing to try would be installing it in virtualbox, even if you ultimately want to do a real install. If that works, then maybe it isn't the disk. You could also then see what you think of the performance; if it's adequate, you will already have solved your problem!

So you are suggesting to create a small new partition. OK, then the format would be NTFS or something else?

I'm suggesting that you plan which partitions you need for your dual boot system. The Windows ones should be NTFS, including the tiny boot partition, as you say.

One way would be to create a 100MB primary partition (which must come first) and make the rest into an extended partition. Divide this into logical partitions, of which the first could be for Windows (I'm not sure if it actually needs to be the first, but it won't hurt). Think about how much room you want to give Windows, allowing for any large programs you may want to install later, and data. As for Linux, if you have 2GB memory or less, you should create a swap partition the same size as your memory. You can do so anyway even if you have more memory. You can create a separate /home if you like, in which case the Salix / partition (where the OS goes) might be 10GB or so, though more doesn't hurt if you have plenty of room. Or just have one big partition for everything - the simplest way. Again, the web is full of suggestions for partition schemes. The classic setup is /, /home, swap. The choice is yours!

EDIT

I've just noticed you say you have XP. So in that case, as I said above, you only need one big partition for Windows. This should be a primary partition and the first on the hard disk. The 'boot' partition for Windows started with Vista, I believe.

As I said a post or two back, two things to try would be giving the disk a gentle clean, and virtualbox. If it works in virtualbox then maybe it isn't a physical problem. Probably you have a defective disk (or optical drive) though. You could test those two hypotheses by borrowing another XP disk, and by using your existing disk to install XP on another machine, if that's practicable.

It's no help to you now, but it's a good idea to back up things like Windows installation disks. :( I would make a physical backup and also save an image file somewhere, perhaps in more than one place.
