Salix Xfce 14.0.1

Post by gapan »

Salix Xfce 14.0.1 is ready! There have been a lot of updates in the 14.0 branch, including several security updates that prompted this new release. Salix Xfce 14.0.1 is based on Xfce 4.10 and comes with an updated 3.2.45 kernel that fixes several security issues, LibreOffice updated to version 4.x, java security updates, an update to Midori, our main browser to version 0.5.2 along with an updated webkit engine that includes a lot of stability fixes plus a lot more security updates to several packages like flash-plugin, pidgin, perl, Xorg etc. A couple of minor bugs that were also present after the original 14.0 release are fixed now.

Also, the screensaver is disabled by default now, as it seems there were a few cases with some graphics cards acting up with certain 3D screensavers. So, this is probably the safest way to avoid any crashes. Any users that want to enable the screensaver can certainly do it from the respective entry in the Settings menu in Xfce.

Users that have installed 14.0 and have kept up with package updates do not need to replace their installations with this one, but new installations should be made with this iso, to spare the user a lot of package upgrades (including a kernel upgrade that could go bad for inexperienced users) after installation.

As always, this release is available in 32-bit and 64-bit architectures. You can download the iso images from Sourceforge or by using a torrent client

Are there any differences among a fresh install and updated 14.0 ? I couldn`t find any newer packages on the iso that are different from what I already have.

Further ...

Am experiencing problems with installing nvidia-driver via 'sourcery'
Following error message :

Code: Select all

tar: /usr/src/slapt-src/system/nvidia-driver/nvidia-modprobe-319.32.tar.bz2: Cannot open: No such file or directory
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
fakeroot -- sh nvidia-driver.SlackBuild Failed
installing 'libvdpau' and 'nvidia-kernel' was no problem.

Any help? Thank you.

It seems that sourcery (slapt-src) is not downloading all the source tarballs required by this build. From the slackbuild nvidia-driver.info file"

Code: Select all

PRGNAM="nvidia-driver"
VERSION="319.32"
HOMEPAGE="http://www.nvidia.com"
DOWNLOAD="ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/319.32/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-319.32.run \
          ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nvidia-installer/nvidia-installer-319.32.tar.bz2 \
	  ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nvidia-modprobe/nvidia-modprobe-319.32.tar.bz2 \
	  ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nvidia-persistenced/nvidia-persistenced-319.32.tar.bz2 \
	  ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nvidia-settings/nvidia-settings-319.32.tar.bz2 \
          ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nvidia-xconfig/nvidia-xconfig-319.32.tar.bz2"
.
.
Slapt-get (sourcery) is only downloading one of the files in the list, then tries to untar them all, but obviously can untar an archive if it's not there. Frankly, this slackbuild looks very complicated and is installling a lot of other stuff besides the driver. I would suggest that you skip the sourcey approach and just install the nvidia driver using the install script following these directions:

I never use xscreensaver. Now that it was mentioned I tried it.
First Preview OK, second Preview OK, third, bang and I faced the login screen.

Oh good! Salix OS XFCE is the best, most fully loaded XFCE distro of all time...
I was really starting to dread having to wait for something new by Slackware 14.1 release...???....
I have only one problem with Slackware 14 and Salix 14 which was the kernel.
I have Ivy Bridge processor and had to compile up the 3.4 kernel to make it work.
I think this might be the new 3.2 kernel which has the right code in it, hopefully.
If not, I will just make another 3.4 kernel...

I really appreciate having the XFCE OS fully loaded with many, many themes...
It is just a breeze to run this system. I am downloading now and thank you..

I just checked in Slackel-Openbox-3.1 with all the latest updates, run xscreensaver Preview
of most screensavers and had no crash. Just thought to let know.
