Mate desktop not starting

My Xfce panel gave me options of vertical or horizontal- and vertical would go to left edge. But I am managing with Mate- got main panel on right edge like your system, leaving task switcher panel on the bottom edge.

Unlock the Xfce panel in Panel Preferences and you can then drag and drop to any position using handles which appear at both ends.
