My antiX netbook was just stolen so I can't check this right now (no time either) but
they have a utility for creating iso or usb stick from the live session.
Or burning a system snapshot to DVD.
So theoretically it should be possible to modify antiX 15 (they may have a newer kernel package now).

gapan wrote:OK, I did some searching and this is most probably a bug with the linux kernel. It seems that a change was introduced at some point that broke compatibility with AMD K-6 and went unnoticed for quite a while. I can confirm that the issue reported in that mailing list thread is fixed in kernel 4.4.9, now shipped in slackware-current. So, in theory, that should work with your CPU. I'm not sure when exactly that issue was introduced, or when it was fixed. I know it wasn't fixed in 4.1.4. You could wait for our 14.2beta release, shouldn't be too long now. That will include 4.4.9, or newer.

You can try a slackware-current iso too: http://bear.alienbase.nl/mirrors/slackw ... rrent-iso/
Well I tried to try ( ;) ) the slackware-current-mini-install.iso I found at the link provided above. The CD burned from the iso wouldn't even try to boot; the machines - both of them- didn't recognize it as a bootable CD; they timed out and booted from the hard drive. I even tried in a more modern (but still old) machine, a 1.7GHz Celeron; same result. md5sum checked OK on the iso.

Yes, strange things happen.

Please read isolinux/README.TXT on the CD or from the mounted image.

Late to the party here. I've been assisting the OP at Linux Questions Org. But with AntiX and Wary. Not Salix.

The main issue on his gear is his i586 only cpu. Maybe the cdrom drive is starting to get flaky from age. But he installed a couple of Linux installs on it already.

I talked with Anticapitalista about his K5/K6 cpu and AntiX kernel support for those i586 cpus. He also pretty much said what Gapan posted.
Like Gapan says. Kernels got iffy with i586 for awhile. Hence why AntiX 11 through 16 won't boot but 8.5 will.

Some one else with a i586 cpu machine needs to weigh in I guess to describe better the issue.

There is a boot info script available online for situations like these. But not sure if any use since I do not have any i586 gear.

https://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/

@ the OP. You can post

Code: Select all

 inxi -Fxx
To give Gapan and other members a better idea on what your gear is like.

That was the last activity before sleep was allowed.

That's not the reason. The member junqueman has the cause been formulated correctly, only the fact is the member unaware.

The CD is not bootable, because the used ISO image is not bootable. Therefore, the link to the README file. This text also describes namely the reason for not booting.

Why not quote the file yourself?

Anyway, the latest stable kernel ought to work.

Roky, would it be possible to boot antix 15 (obviously on a pc where it boots), compile the latest stable kernel (make debs or just install it in live),
then remaster so that this kernel is a boot option or default in live? Maybe too much to ask but ..

Correct. junqueman should try the 2.6GB dvd image. I didn't even notice the mini-install iso.

Not sure exactly what is meant by this response, or I'd try to clarify (if necessary).

One of the machines has no DVD drive. In the other one, I've not been successful trying to boot from its DVD drive, although it seems to be working OK in all other respects. Which is why I downloaded the mini-install iso.
