Salix "14.2"

Post by skrotnisse »

Does anyone have experiences of installing Salix "14.2" according to this guide: https://docs.salixos.org/wiki/How_to_up ... .1_to_14.2 ?
I'm thinking of upgrading to 14.2.

I think those instructions are still up to date. If you are used to the command line, it shouldn't be too difficult.

There may be a beta in a month or so ... perhaps ...

Hi,

to those who know what has changed.

In: How to upgrade Salix 14.1 to 14.2
https://docs.salixos.org/wiki/How_to_up ... .1_to_14.2

chapter: Obsolete packages

are two not working links:
ftp://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/slackware/s ... _HINTS.TXT
ftp://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/slackware/s ... _HINTS.TXT.

I get the error message: 550 Failed to change directory.

In ftp://ftp.ntua.gr/pub/linux/slackware/ are no longer directories slackware-14.2 or slackware64-14.2.

Since slackware-14.2 is not ready yet the links for upgrading to 14.2 are
http://ftp.ntua.gr/mirror/slackware/sla ... _HINTS.TXT
http://ftp.ntua.gr/mirror/slackware/sla ... _HINTS.TXT
When slackware 14.2 released then current will be 14.2 in above links.

Yesterday I upgraded 14.1 (fluxbox) to 14.2 on a bare metal desktop box. All went well, instructions worked perfectly. Only thing you will notice is that there are quite a few Salix supplied programs that are not in the repos yet. Some I noticed are: Lxterm, pcmanfm, etc.... Looks like DM switched from Slim to GDM, so I had to add fluxbox to the gdm config for it to show up in the login options. Other than that it was fine. If you have some experience with Slack, then you could upgrade and fill in the missing items you need, although, I would imagine if you went with Xfce it would be ready straight away.

Most users should still wait at least until RC beta 1 is out.

My wifes laptop is still on 14.1 as she doesn't like me fooling with it too much.
