Salix Xfce 14.2beta1

Post by gapan »

So here it is, Salix Xfce 14.2beta1. There has been some time since our alpha release and there are a lot of new and interesting things.

The first thing you will notice, is that when booting one of the iso images you don't get a boot prompt anymore. What you get is a boot menu and the menu offers options to install Salix in several different languages. So you can now install Salix, not only in English, but using your own language as well! Most of the translations are only partially complete at this point, but you can help with the tranlation effort so that everything will be complete by the time we finally release 14.2.

In order to have the installation procedure completely translated you need to provide translations for the following resources at the Transifex project page for Salix:
- salix-installer: https://www.transifex.com/gapan/salix/salix-installer/
- salixtools: https://www.transifex.com/gapan/salixtools/dashboard/
- liloconfig: https://www.transifex.com/gapan/salix/liloconfig/
- eliloconfig: https://www.transifex.com/gapan/salix/eliloconfig/

The menus that the images boot to are provided by syslinux on systems equiped with BIOS. On UEFI systems, the 64-bit iso now boots using elilo, in place of grub, and it provides similar menus to syslinux. The 32-bit iso now includes both the i586 non-PAE and the i686 PAE kernels. You can choose between the two in the boot menu.

In terms of software selection, Xfce has been upgraded to 4.12. The main browser has been changed back to Firefox. Also, network configuration is now handled by NetworkManager. Pulseaudio is now controlling the audio output by default, which should help a lot with bluetooth speakers, HDMI audio etc. Other than that it's mostly the same as in previous releases, with LibreOffice, Claws-Mail, Gimp, Parole, Transmission, Viewnior, Zim etc. Everything has been upgraded to their latest release at this point. Of course, the usual collection of Salix System Tools is included as well.

The artwork has been updated too. There is a new default background and the default widget theme is now Adwaita.

There is still some work to be done until the final release. The revamped installer still needs some polishing and there are probably going to be some new system tools to play with.

You can download this beta release either from Sourceforge, or using a torrent client with the following links:

I need to add that there is still no SlackBuilds repository for 14.2. So, in order for slapt-src/Sourcery to be able to load the SlackBuild data, you'll first have to edit /etc/slapt-get/slapt-srcrc and change every instance of 14.2 to 14.1. Once SlackBuilds releases a 14.2 repository (after Slackware 14.2 has been officially released), we'll have a 14.2 repository for that too and you will then be able to switch the repositories back to 14.2.

Tried to install Salix64 Xfce 14.2beta1 (64-bit, x86_64) in Virtual box. MD5 checked. Kept getting "Install error # 2". Am tired right now, will try again tomorrow.
Any ideas?

you probably need 32bit version for virtualbox. Some PC's do not have KVM enabled in Bios.

Hi!

Great work - it pleases me!

I think i have found two bugs:
Engrampa doesn't work (libjson-glib not found)
Thunar can't unzip too.

./rc.cgproxy start
Error: cgproxy should only run inside containers
is this deamon necessary?

The following are only inconsistencies:
Networkmanger dosen't work after first start, because you have to configure the WPA-Password first.
This is ok of course, but you get a ambiguous messages if starting the first time from the Panel-Applet.
I think there should be a message about the missing password!?

Xfburn 0.5.4 has problems with several MP3-Files!
(The most files works correct - ogg too)
If you want to burn a Audio-CD you get the error:
"gstreamer did not like this file (detection timed out)"
This problem is solved with xfburn 0.5.5!
Or you install 0.5.2 - then you need the "old" gstreamer-plugins
See: http://www.bitbenderforums.com/forums/s ... ram-xfburn

You have to install language- and helppack for Libreoffice manually.
(but this is petty and stuffy  )

Thanks

Hi sjox, thanks for the report!

Right! Both are fixed with

Code: Select all

sudo slapt-get -i json-glibc
sjox wrote: ./rc.cgproxy start

No, both cgproxy and cgmanager can be safely turned off. It will be the default in next releases. For now:

Code: Select all

sudo service stop cgproxy
sudo service stop cgmanager

I'm not sure what to do about this. If it is a problem, it is with NetworkManager and we can't fix it directly.

Did you install the multimedia codecs first using salix-codecs-installer?

OK, I confirmed that. I'll see what I can do.

gapan,

Just did a fresh install and all is working well. One minor quirk, thunar is not managing the desktop (right click does nothing, and no background is set).

I just uploaded a new xfburn package. You should get it as soon as mirrors sync. It should fix this.

Are you sure? I can't see anything like that here. Maybe you installed over an old home directory and settings got mixed up somehow? Can you try with a new user?
