Salix + Nvidia consumes too much ram

Post by travis82 »

Hi
I have installed Nvidia340 driver using it's own installer. I need Nvidia for google-earth. But this system is not powerful and has only 2 gig ram. With Nvidia driver, Salix-Xfce ram usage dramatically increases from 200 mb to 600 mb in idle state. Is there a way to reduce ram consumption without changing desktop?

Hello Hosein,

I'd rather try to upgrade Firefox to 60.3.0esr if not already done, or use chromium.

Best regards,

Didier

Hi Didier
I didn't get your point. I asked about ram usage of system in idle state without opening any program. Why should my system eats 400 mb more ram just to boot Xfce desktop? I guess you mean running google-earth in browser instead of using it's API. Browser based google-earth just provides some basic features which are not useful for professional tasks.

I wrongly assumed that you ran google-earth in a browser, sorry for the confusion. Did you try memusage/memusagestat to check what processes actually consume the RAM? top and htop can also help.

Also there is no lack of messages about google earth consuming a lot of RAM on the Internet (maybe not relevant to this case, though), and I doubt that using a lighter graphical environment be more than a workaround.

Google-earth is not guilty here. I see this increase in ram usage just after booting to Xfce. I know this issue has nothing to do with Salix. It seems that Xfce components use much more ram in comparison with a nouveau enabled system. Take a look at attached image

Also I find some topic about this issue with Xfce and Nvidia and not sure if this the case. just for the report I have installed infinality patch set and i'm not using genuine cairo.

Edit: Also I am using Salix 32 bit on 64 bit system.
