Please help translate Slint

Post by DidierSpaier »

Hi there,

To prepare the release of Slint 14.2 (see the post in the Slint sub forum) we need that the translations on Transifex be completed, cf.:
https://www.transifex.com/didier_spaier ... slint-142/
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... ost5630584
Are in concern the translations > 90% completed.

If you are not yet registered as a Slint translator please make a join request on Transifex but also get in touch with the coordinator for the target language to avoid duplicating efforts. If you don't receive a fast answer from him (some may be no more active) or for any question, just drop me a line: didier~at~slint~dot~fr.

Also, I just honored a request to activate the Japanese language for the slint and slint-website project in Transifex. However there are some caveat so please contact me first if you want to translate in an ideographic language (CJK).

Thanks in advance,

Didier

I applied for it. I will translate work soon.
I found a Japanese Slackware users who was attention to Slint. That users may also be added.
Perhaps users seem to have been unable to find the location of Transifex or did not know the mechanism of Transifex.

Thanks for joining, balloon.

Sadly, there are hurdles that prevent to translate our main file https://www.transifex.com/didier_spaier ... slint-142/ at the moment.

The Slint installer is a text only one, so we need a framebuffer to handle more than 512 glyphs.

In previous versions I did include fbterm in the installer for that, but in some cases (old video hardware) it failed.

Also we wanted to display LTR language that need bidirectional display (like for a mix of Persian and English), and the "dialog" program that we use is not bidi-able. For the records I requested that from Thomas E.Dickey, but that is not on top of his very long TODO list I guess (he is also the developer of xterm, by the way).

Then I considered another possibility: maybe use the framebuffer terminal bterm instead of fbterm, and newt/whiptail instead of ncurses/dialog. That's what Debian uses for its text installer. Alas, replacing dialog by whiptail is not straightforward, so this would need to re-write many of the dialogs in the installer.

Maybe the Nosh project could be a path to explore, see e.g. http://jdebp.eu/Softwares/nosh/user-vt-screenshots.html. However I lack the knowledge to really understand how it works and it would take me a lot of time to learn that.

So, as our website needs to be completely rewritten the best you can do for now is translate to Japanese the man pages for the pkgtools and slackpkg packages - knowing that this is more useful for Slackware than for Slint now as we adopted the tools used by Salix in Slint. Follow the links from this page if you are interested: https://www.transifex.com/didier_spaier ... ontent/and read the recommendations in this page: http://slint.fr/en/contribute.html.

Also, I would like to know if the Japanese ideographs can be properly displayed in "dialog" in an fbterm. Maybe you could try with the WenQuanYi Zen Hei Mono TTF font?

Cheers,

Didier

Yup. I understand that. (I have the same reaction to Salix)
Therefore, I will exclude the translation of the CLI installer and I will translate it elsewhere.
