How to mount external USB-HDD ntfs-formatted

Post by jpg153 »

Hi all,

all the best for 2020!

I just bought a portable HDD as backup for photos etc.
It uses an USB3-port and comes preformatted with NTFS.

I am a bit lost in finding a proper way to mount the drive to be able to push some files onto it.
It would be perfect to have it mounted all the time I plug it.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks.
Regards Gruß

As far as I know it should be recognized automatically.

Do you have ntfs-3g installed?

And what does dmesg show after you plug it in?

After I read your post yesterday late, I plugged in the external HDD but then went to bed without doing anything on the matter.
This morning the device was there and ready... :?:
I could transfer some files onto it and all seems fine.
Now after a reboot, the external HDD is active but not showing up.
However, before detaching for the reboot, the dmesg-output was something like this (shortend):

Code: Select all

Now, maybe the size is a problem when trying to mount?

Thanks in advance.

This device's size is 3.64 TiB. How big are its partitions? Does it have a dos partition table or a GPT?

Hi,

there is just 1 partition/volume.
Windows says its a primary partition, NTFS formatted, 3725,9GB.
GPT-Partition.

Thanks

I am puzzled as dmesg output indicates that two partitions are found:

Code: Select all

[501895.067541] sdg: sdg1 sdg2
What is the output of lsblk, 30 seconds after having plugged in the drive?

Hi Didier,

sorry, but even after hours the device does not show up at all.
It remains unmounted.

I don't know what happened last nite so it was mounted this morning. But now, even after more than 3 hours, its not mounted at all.
The HDD-LED keeps flickering, but nothing happens.

Thanks

Can you post what

Code: Select all

sudo lsblk
says after plugging it in?

Although, I think that it might just be this:

Code: Select all

[489904.192137] usb usb4-port1: Cannot enable. Maybe the USB cable is bad?
And it just so happened that after some time, with maybe some wiggling, it finally connected during the night.

Partition size shouldn't be a problem in any case.

ok,

there seems to be a problem with the USB3.0-board.
I plugged the HDD into a standard-USB-port (onboard) and within seconds it shows up:

Code: Select all

jpg[~]$ lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 55,9G 0 disk

sdg 8:96 0 3,7T 0 disk

zram3 250:3 0 256M 0 disk [SWAP]
zram4 250:4 0 256M 0 disk [SWAP]
sdg1 is shown in gparted with "Microsoft reserved partition"
Type is: msftres

So, I think besides the sdg1/sdg2 question, the other q is: what is going on with the USB-3.0 board?

lspci shows:

Re: How to mount external USB-HDD ntfs-formatted

The first partition is probably a partition that includes software for windows PCs, so I wouldn't worry about it.

The USB 3.0 board could just be broken. Do you have other devices that you can connect to it? Do they work properly?

Or maybe it's the hard drive's USB3 circuitry that doesn't work properly while the USB2 circuitry works fine. You'll need to test with other PCs with both USB2 and USB3 ports to find out I guess.
