Unable to boot new 15.0 install. (EUFI?)

Post by Kimdino »

I have tried to install Salix 15.0 several times over the past few months but have always been unable to boot the newly installed system. I have tried several different variations on the installation process from different media but always come up with a problem that involves lack of UEFI.

I have tried both with an official installation only disc and a Live disc.

My normal, & highly favoured, partition setup is:-
root on sda1
swap on sda2
home on sda3
opt on sda4
To this I have tried adding a separate boot partition on sda5 in order to be able to concentrate having a dedicated UEFI booting partition. This came to nothing and I have returned to trying with my normal setup.

My motherboard, though quite ancient, does support UEFI. I have been through the option and changed them to UEFI wherever listed. Previously it had been set to 'Legacy & UEFI'. The legacy option is needed to run my current Salix 14.2 installation.

There are 2 hard drives:-
SATA0 is a 3Tb WD that has my current 14.2 installation.
SATA1 is a 3Tb Seagate Barracuda to which I wish to install 15.0

In normal useage I am powering down SATA in the BIOS so that only my damaged, but still running, 14.2 installation is available to boot. Leaving SATA1 switched on causes confusion in the bootloader which then fails. I want to keep my 14.2 installation untouched and thus available for use until I have 15.0 fully set up & running.

So, for doing a 15.0 install, I switch off SATA0 and turn on SATA1. Thus SATA1 (i.e. the Barracuda) then appears as /dev/sda and there is no access to the 14.2 (i.e.the WD drive).

After my last attempt, with the following setup:-
SATA0 powered down & SATA1 running as sda,
All relevant BIOS setting set to EUFI,
No separate boot partition.
Booting and installing from official Salix 15.0 DVD (i.e. not Live version)

'eliloconfig' returned "Error: System is not running under UEFI". The same error was generated with all the various boot files that had been generated during several attempts at installation.

My 14.2 installation is cobbling along in a badly wounded state with much features not working. So I am getting desperate to get a good, fresh 15.0 installation. Does anyone have any ideas where things may be going wrong?

Thanks in advance, Kimdino
