Salix15-Live from USB does not boot

Post by jpg153 »

Hi all,

in order to check whether I can go along my intended "USB only system" I tried to run SalixLive (15, 64bit) from an USB stick.
The stick was prepared some time ago when I had trouble booting my PC.
I made it with "isotousb" and booting the PC from the stick went smooth at that time.

USB stick is formatted fat32 and has 2 folders named "EFI" and "boot" amongst autorun.ico, autorun.inf, efi.img and syslinux.cfg files - which is proper AFAIK.

I plugged this into my notebook and with several attempts I was not able to get to the login.
Right before the login procedure is called the systems automatically reboots.

There is no difference whether its the laptop display or the external monitor engaged.
Where do I need to look at to find the source of the failure.

The laptop is:
HP-Omen 015
AMD Ryzen 5 5600H with Radeon Graphics 3.30 GHz
RAM 16,0 GB
M.2-SSD, TLC with 512 GB PCIe® NVMe™
Graphics NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 3060 (external interface HDMI/DisplayPort)
1 SuperSpeed USB Type-C® 5 Gbit/s Signalrate (DisplayPort™ 1.4, HP Sleep and Charge);
1 SuperSpeed USB Type-A 5 Gbit/s Signalrate (HP Sleep and Charge);
2 SuperSpeed USB Type-A 5 Gbit/s Signalrate;
1 Mini DisplayPort™;
1 HDMI 2,1;
Realtek Gaming GbE Family Controller with RJ-45 (Ethernet)
Intel(R) Wi-Fi 6 AX200 160MHz
Realtek Sound
...

Thanks
Regards Gruß

1. While on elilo boot screen, you see at the bottom the Boot: type there runlevel=3 and press enter. System will go to command line.
Then login typing one and one for password
Type startx to go on X
What are the messages appeared?

2. What is the usb label? It has to be LIVE.
It is strange system reboots automatically.

Hi Djemos,

well, I see the command line you are reffering to but whatever key I tried, I cannot get there.

The USB stick is labelled LIVE.

The boot process comes as far as acpi or processor frequency....something like that and then reboots.

Don't have to go there. Just type runlevel=3 press the buttons of keyboard.
You will see the text appeared there. :)

Hi Djemos,

noop - nothing like that.
I am typing this from my "ordinary" PC booted into SalixLive from the exact same USB stick.

Obvious difference:
I get a graphical menu whereas on the laptop all is text.

When I type in a command i.e. runlevel=3 or acpi=off, there is no text displayed at all and it seems the commands are ignored.
Last time the system rebooted after the networkmanager was invoked.
But it is not always the same last command displayed...

Do I need to tweak BIOS or so?

Is there a way to modify the ISO, ie. other display driver or so?

This is the syslinux boot menu. It is enabled when boot to a system without UEFI/EFI.
Do I need to tweak BIOS or so?
In my laptop i have disabled secure boot and i plug in the salix live usb and press power button. Then quickly press Fn+F12 to go to bios boot menu and from there i pick up USB to boot in salixlive. then the elilo menu appears to choose the language to boot.
I do the same with Fn+F12 to boot with the other usb where i have installed salix. There the grub boot menu appears.
Is there a way to modify the ISO, ie. other display driver or so?
Try to boot with acpi=off from syslinux menu.
But xf86-video-amdgpu package for amd/gpu driver is included in iso.
Same with xf86-video-nouveau for nvidia cards.
And xf86-video-r128 for ATI cards.

Hi Djemos,

well
acpi=off
is exactly what is recommended for installing any linux flavour on that laptop, but again, I can't key in that command.

I am a bit frustrated...

In an UEFI system you get the elilo menu. The yellow cursor is already set to Boot: cyan text box, where you can type runlevel=3 or whatever.
If you cannot type in the text box then i do not know what is going on with your keyboard.

In a non uefi system you get the syslinux menu. In the second image after choosing language have the choices acpi=off, boot in text mode runlevel=3 etc

second menu

Hi Djemos,

this is more or less exactly what I found.
The first screen is when booting the laptop, the second & third when booting my "old ordinary" PC.

I indeed find it curious that the keyboard does not work for keying in data.
It accepts the return key, the F-keys work as well as the arrow keys, but no way to key in any other info.

I will give it some further tries with usb attached keyboard. Maybe this will help.

I will let you know!

Thanks!
