issue with root user

Post by jpg153 »

Happy new year!

As a perfect match I crashed my system around xmas. I tried to upgrade the kernel to the latest 5.15.x but it did not run through as the disk/partition was full. Then I tried to fix this the wrong way and ended up with a non booting system. I could not restore the old system, so I went for a new install. I installed via the standard iso on usb stick and upgraded everything short after that. I tried some icon sets and themes and then something strange happened:
When I start i.e. gslpat I am prompted for the password. The screens becomes flickering and blurred and that prompt looks totally different to what it was before.

When the "root" application runs, the mouse pointer always shows ongoing action.

This is with any app requiring root privileges.

Also starting "root terminal" or "root terminal from here" does not work at all. If I need to run a command with root privileges, I need to open a normal terminal session and "sudo".
This is not the behaviour I had and I think it also not standard, but I have not yet found the setting/point/app... which will turn this back to normal.

Any hint?

That is all very strange. Are you sure you haven't mixed any parts of the previous installation or another distribution in there?

You shouldn't be getting that root prompt for gslapt in salix. It looks like maybe you installed gksu? You wouldn't need that, as gnsu is already installed.

There is also no "root terminal here" option by default in Salix, so no idea how you got that.

Well,

I uninstalled gksu, but no change.
You are right "root terminal from here" was probably something I did on my own or at least tried to do so.

After the crash I cleaned the volumes and installed salix from usb stick, so no interference with the old system.
But even if, the old system never showed this.
Maybe I clean up again and reinstall a second time.
Because, when root is enabled as shown, there is a small CPU load created.

I had a similar effect when I called i.e. thunar with root privileges from a terminal session.

Anyway, I will check further and maybe reinstall...

Thanks

You say you uninstalled, but everything else says you didn't. Are you sure?

Code: Select all

ls /var/lib/pkgtools/packages/*gksu*

That is a known issue with gksu, and that's the reason we don't use it.

Also, make sure you have gnsu installed. Reinstall if needed.

Hi gapan,

I did a reinstall of salix from scratch, including repartitioning of the SSD and reformatting.
I then updated kernel and upgraded all packages, installed all I need (as far I as I remember ;) ) and so far all is fine.

Dont know where that quirk came from, as there is no other OS, except virtual, on any of the SSD/HDD in that machine.

Thanks anyway.
