Salix LXDE edition 13.1.1 is ready!

Post by gapan »

Here's an update to our LXDE edition! The main selection of software has stayed the same as in the previous LXDE release: Midori is used as the default web browser, claws-mail is the default email client, abiword, gnumeric and epdfview are there for your office needs and exaile, brasero and whaaw! media player are included in the multimedia application section, all running in the same lightweight LXDE desktop. Following the changes in the standard XFCE release, several things have been updated though. Here's the list of what changed:

* Lilosetup, a new graphical tool that can be used for setting up the Lilo bootloader has been added.
* New graphical system administration tools have been added; a tool to manage ALSA sound cards and one to manage system hostnames. All salix system tools are now available in a "basic" installation too.
* Dotnew has received a major overhaul and it now has a powerful GTK+2 interface, replacing the previous Xdialog based one.
* The installation CDs can now be used as a local repository with slapt-get/gslapt, complete with dependency support. Detailed instructions on how to do that can be found in the README file in the iso images. This will help users with no internet access that are performing "core" or "basic" mode installations and would like an easy way to install extra software found in a "full" mode installation.
* New software included in this release includes the meld visual diff and merge tool, which is also utilized by dotnew and gigolo, a tool that helps mount remote filesystems, which was previously only included in the XFCE release, but was missed by a lot of LXDE users.
* Several security fixes and package upgrades, which among others include new xorg-server and new webkit and midori packages.
* An older version of the intel driver (2.9.1) is included in the installation media in the salix/extra directory. This is not installed by default but might be of use with some intel graphics cards. You can read the README.intel file in the iso image for more details.

Downloads are available from sourceforge or by using a torrent client. The iso image weighs 468MB.

The full source code for this release is provided in the form of a dvd-sized iso image (850 MB) and can be downloaded from sourceforge. Download links for this and other releases can be found in our "Download" page:

Have fun!

Under the .torrent link you can write:

Magnet link

Code: Select all

magnet:?xt=urn:btih:8fc8ff02b8973a6de935de187d45131b7d0888ca&dn=salix-lxde-13.1.1.iso&tr=http%3A%2F%2Ftracker.openbittorrent.com%2Fannounce&tr=http%3A%2F%2Fdenis.stalker.h3q.com%3A6969%2Fannounce&tr=http%3A%2F%2Ftracker.publicbt.com%3A80%2Fannounce
magnet:?xt=urn:btih:8fc8ff02b8973a6de935de187d45131b7d0888ca&dn=salix-lxde-13.1.1.iso&tr=http://tracker.openbittorrent.com/announce&tr=http://denis.stalker.h3q.com:6969/announce&tr=http://tracker.publicbt.com:80/announce

I'd never used a magnet link until I saw this, thanks.

You're very welcome!

Someone else, who read that post, thanked me, just a while ago, for this too.
I find this very concerning because IMO too many people don't know about it.

In short: Magnetlink + DHT* + PEX* = Government is helpless when trying to censor the interwebz*.

People MUST know this stuff.
Many smart people don't know about it, unfortunately.

___________________
* DHT is giving the ability to share content (the ability to connect to peers) without the need of a tracker, BUT if a torrent is configured to block/disable DHT & PEX (a.k.a private torrent) then the tracker need to be mentioned in the magnet: address (&tr=<tracker address>).
* PEX is a helpful, but is not really required to make the point that I'm presenting here.
* A .torrent file must be possessed by someone who is connected to "the" bittorrent "network" (has the ability to connect to you).
The magnetlink is addressing to the .torrent file and the .torrent file is addressing to the content that is indexed by the .torrent file.

Neither BitComet nor Transmission yet support Magnet links but Transmission is planning to include Magnet link support in the upcoming 1.8 release. Bearing in mind that no site, including The Pirate Bay, has yet abandoned support for traditional torrent files, there is plenty of time for support to be added.
Lucky Salixers with new transmission.

@gapan
You've nothing written about update issues. Should it be enough to do only "slapt-get --upgrade"?

Yes, but if you also want the newly introduced packages, you'll have to install them too of course.
