Hello, back again. I don't give up easy, and i won't go to something because it's easy. I'm looking for something that will work for me. If I wanted easy I would stay with Microsoft and Windows. I've worked my farm and my shop for 50 years, you can't work a farm and give up easily. I will admit I'm not the sharpest pencil in the box, but I work hard at things I try. I may not see something that is obvious to you young folks, I may even ask questions that may make some of you roll your eyes. I will give Salix a good, hard, workout. That I promise.

Hi Grampa Bear,
If there is an icon for the installer, I'm guessing you are using the Salix Live CD? If so, it should ask you for the administrator (root) passwords which is:
live
BTW, if you use Salix Live CD, make sure you are using the latest 13.0.1 stable one:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/salix/f ... o/download
or even our new 13.1 test version:
http://enialis.net/~jrd/salix/salixlive ... ,10:25.iso
Don't hesitate to post further questions if you get stuck with something else. Nice to see you sticking it out.

Interesting, so your young pal in the shop stuck a different component inside your netbook, not something you push into a slot on the side or a USB port? He's right that most Intel wireless is pretty well sure to work with Linux. What model number of Dell netbook do you have there?
Now just take it easy when you are at that command line. Here's another command for you; ps aux. This will show you all the processes running on your machine. Similar to the top command, but top is dynamic, it shows what changes are going on. You will get a lot of output from ps aux, to make it easier to read and digest you can make the output scroll down screen by screen. For example -
$ps aux | more
The '|' is what they call a pipe - it takes the output of ps aux and gives it to the 'more' command which presents the output in readable chunks rather than all the output whizzing by when it is more than fills the terminal. The space bar pages through. And don't forget that 'man'.

Hi Grampa Bear,
I know everyone is firing commands at you but could you please provide the output of the following commands .
Code: Select all
/sbin/lspci
/sbin/lsmod
/sbin/iwconfig
You can delete the information after
ESSID: and
Access Point: from the last command if you wish.

Hello again!
Mr. Gnomic, the little Dell I have is a mini 9. It has 2 gigabytes of memory and a 16 gigabyte solid hard drive. It wasn't difficult for him to change the card. He removed a panel from the back of the computer and the orignal wireless card was right there. One of the advantages of living in a rural area like I do, is eventually you get to know or meet most of the residents of the county. My sons and daughters were active in many of the social groups (4H, FFof A, NRA, and hunting/fishing clubs) so many of the young folks of the area visited our home sooner or later.

Mr. Pwatk,
I have to get Salix re-installed on my computer first, then I'll give the commands a try and let you know.
