IMO this is a likely to be a problem with pcmanfm rather than anything else. Although it's a great filemanager it has a lot of bugs which include mounting devices and displaying thumbnails to list just a few.
Before I started using Salix I was running LXDE on Slackware for about a year. At one point I got fed up, recompiled pcmanfm without hal support and started using sudo with the mumount script from RIPLinux to make life easier.
That said Thunder has a fit over my esata drive so I guess you can't win them all.

Thunar is also buggy - especially here on Fedora 13. Always those extensions to blame

In my Openbox+PCManFM-dev setup I'm using Dolphin to mount my stuff

But I'm looking forward to the next PCManFM dev release. I hope it will fix all my problems
