No! Still no change! I have changed my password to something without any characters that need escaping, now I just have the '@' and the dot in the domain part. I still get the 'couldn't resolve proxy name' error. On internet explorer (BAH), when it shows me the login window to authenticate to the proxy I enter as user 'user@domain.pt' and a plain password. In Firefox I don't need the '@domain.pt' part. In Debian I just enter:

'http_proxy=http://host:port@user@domain.pt:password'

How differently is Debian treating this variable?
I am pretty sure that I only have to get right the part of the user to authenticate to the proxy.

This indicates the proxy is not available to your machine. Can you try simply pinging that host.

Looking again you are right! I interpreted this has the user and passwd was not being accepted by the proxy. I'll have to see my notes on the replies from the proxy.
I did try to ping the proxy but it didn't work. This could be because the proxy is not responding to the ping, right?
How can I work around this? Updating is not very important but installing applications is. Any ideas!?
