Is this layout better?

I prefer the one you posted before - fewer choices on screen at once, but everything can still be accessed with one click, and the categories are meaningful and also few enough to be clicked through quickly enough in case of doubt. EDIT Also no scrolling required
Do you plan to have explanatory messages when the mouse hovers over something, as in the live tools? I still don't understand when I should run dotnew, for instance (when gapan tells me to

), or what it really does.
Such a message could help a bit with the difficulty I mentioned as an example earlier (regarding sound), by saying that actually
setting the volume is not done here as some less experienced users might expect, but with alsamixer or - presumably there is a graphical mixer somewhere in settings (I'm using xmonad just now so can't check).

I like the second design, but not with vertical scroll bars.

I prefer the tabs but you could probably use a mixture of both designs.

I'm afraid we will need those, the full window will be pretty big when it is fully populated... (even if I put the captions on the right side instead of below)

LOL, it looks like we'll have to have both
(one by default and a check box for the alternate layout....)

It's rather a small sample size.

Akuna, at the current design there is pretty much space wasted

I've been wondering, what is that sourcery thing?
