got it, i think

slkbuild -X is just the command that builds a package,from inside a build directory
spkg -u newpackage.txz is a command which simply upgrades the package created

That sounds right to me, though I confess I've never done the procedure you're undertaking! I'm not sure why the instructions ask you to upgrade (-u) not install (-i) but maybe this way gives better results in case files are present from previous installs (failed or not).
