Clex seems ok. As mimosa noted, ranger is another option. vifm is nice too. But none of them is as popular as mc is. Everybody knows mc and there's nothing wrong with it. So, changing the default (terminal) file manager to anything other than mc, something that most people won't know, doesn't make much sense. Everyone is free to install anything after installation, but the default will be mc.
As for pathfinder, or most gui file managers, we're talking about the ratpoison edition here. One main feature that any app should have is to be fully usable without a mouse. Gnome-commander is in there and it's as good a match as it gets.
