In Brazil, there is a distinction between what you are qualified to do ("profissão") and what you actually do ("emprego").

I am 1) a specialist in eighteenth-century German literature and history of ideas

2) jack-of-all-trades, translator, etc.

3) (reproductive labour, which traditionally doesn't count as work) I do the lion's share of the cooking and such for my family and dogs

There is always a difference between what you study to and what you do. Here in Portugal it's the same thing. Most people study for something and end up doing something else. I have the luck of doing the work I like, some electronic and some system administration. But the important thing is doing what you do with joy. I saw a documentary on discovery channel about a boss who pretended to be a new guy on the job and was going to be with someone that was working there. The job was emptying those toilets that are in construction sites, mostly used in the US, and this guy that was doing this for years, he demonstrated a huge joy in doing what he did. He would pretend that he would be a night and the bad guys would be the toilets. It may not be your dream job but if you do it with joy and you appreciate what you do, life becomes easier. And doing something against our will it's very disturbing.

How true!
My degree study was (BS Computer Sciences).... However much as I love IT and Programming..
My main function is that of an Agency Broker/Owner.. Insurance-Real Estate-Financial Investment...
I have, however, maintained for over 25 years, a separate IT consulting company which services small business clients.
We specialize ( my Brother and myself) in Database Design SQL linked by GUI interfaces. We do this for small businesses in the Financial and Civil Business sector.

Hence my identity... sqlpython.. :)

Basically been a jack of all trades (and master of none...) getting an education first in business, then (shortly) in psychology to finally get involved in overseas voluntary works for most of my younger years, which had me dabble in diverse and various unrelated fields such as teaching, puppetry, music and eventually computer refurbishing on quite a large scale...
I settled down and started an artistic activity in ballooning decoration and twisting almost ten years ago which has now grown to a full time business which I enjoy much except for the fact that it leaves me little enough time left for the rest of my other activities which of course includes Salix development but also a small bulging side activity in technical translations, Web and software development which I'd like to eventually develop some more.
