I tried to use VLC under my wife's log in and it works perfectly! So I must have a configuration issue.

Does anyone know what file has to be configured? I have just created a new user for my alter-ego. If I have to I can try this route. Thanks for everyone's input.

But it is still driving me nuts!

You could look at ~/.asoundrc and ~/.config/vlc/* for a start.
