Yes barchi, as I wrote above, "Telnet (rather than ssh) might be the easiest tool to check this."
You could also check "man ssh" to see whether ssh has an option to work unencrypted, as a replacement for telnet.
Another alternative might be to check whether a communications program such as minicom might have a telnet mode, for using TCP/IP (ethernet) instead of an RS-232 serial port.
