Usually when I have X trouble the console text screens are also clobbered and ctrl-alt-F1,2 and 3 do not work.

Fortunately ctrl-alt-delete did work to allow for a "clean" shutdown.

Usually I just edit the /etc/inittab and put a 3 in it:
id:3:initdefault:
