Re: hibernate key does not work

I have done a new install again, so swap is not on sda2 anymore. When I did the install, added the option for resume, so I didn't even have to modify lilo.conf this time. It is so strange that I have had this computer for years, and have always used suspend (I just hit the moon button on my keyboard) with no problems running several different versions of linux, but now non of them work....
The moon button on my keyboard doesn't do anything in Salix, but I have tried using Suspend and Hibernate in the logout menu.

I wonder if this could be hardware related? I just run the live cd of pclinuxos (the old one I originally used and worked fine before). And when I run suspend, it did the same thing and shut down.
I just went into my bios, and set everything to default, but that did not fix the problem.
I have tried:
pm-suspend
pm-hibernate
and pm-suspend-hybrid
They all just shut the computer down like I pulled out the power cord, and almost that fast. Usually when I suspend it takes a few seconds, but this is almost instant.

Was the other distribution on the same machine? Can you compare logs?
Sometimes there is a BIOS setting for what sleep mode to use. I can't remember which was what off the top of my head, but my desktop had a problem with one of the options.
I did find a backup of my computer I had take, but there was not a /var/log/pm-suspend.log there.

I get the same thing here and suspend to disk works fine.
Does the wake-up porblem occur with suspend to RAM?
can you try as root
and see what happens?

Yes, I get a power off when I try suspending to RAM.
However running echo disk > /sys/power/state was interesting. It shut it down, but the boot up process was not the same. It went through lilo, then just came right into my desktop like it had not been shutoff.

OK! That's working. So suspend is possible, but not working in the way we want it to.
Searching around I see that some people have had success creating a file in /etc/pm/config.d and putting SUSPEND_MODULES="xhci_hcd ehci_hcd"
but I don't see either of those modules in your log. I seem to recall seeing this advice before, but don't remember if it ever solved a problem of mine.
This is getting beyond where I've been before in my troubleshooting and I don't seem to be using the right search terms to get the answer.
You can try running pm-hibernate and looking at /var/log/pm-suspend.log and hope that a meaningful error shows up (or it miraculously starts working or something)
You can create a script to do the echo disk > /sys/power/state and setup sudo so it can run without needing a password.
Maybe a newer kernel or version of pm-utils?
Sorry that I seem to be grasping at straws here...

Thanks, I was able to set it up by adding this to /etc/sudoers
username ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/sbin/pm-hibernate
username ALL = NOPASSWD: /usr/sbin/pm-suspend
Then setting up a keyboard shortcut to sudo /usr/sbin/pm-hibernate should work, and it does for shortcuts other than using the moon key...
Also I am thinking when I used to use the moon key, it was using suspend rather than hibernate, because it never had to start all over again when it came back up, and was much faster than hibernate. Also it left the power light blinking before.
Anyway, I will keep looking into it. Thanks for the help.

Thanks. That now has my moon key working to hibernate, which seems to work good now.
The only problem now is I would like to be able to suspend to ram. And when I change it to suspend, it just shuts down.
Are there any bios settings that would do this? It sure is strange that this just started happening when I installed salix, but I also see the same thing with every distribution I try now.

My guess is that in your other previous distributions, which were probably older versions of the ones you have now, you were running an older version of the kernel and somehow in newer versions of the kernel, that newer versions of the distributions you're trying now have, there has been a regression concerning your hardware. Long sentence I know, does it make sense?
