That was a long time ago! It seems the NUC is still around:

Does anyone have any experience of it, or alternative suggestions for something similar - not ARM, mid-range performance, totally silent?

@gapan are you still using yours? This was seven or eight years ago, which is geological ages!

At some point I bought the Airtop (probably 3) and it is brilliant but too powerful for my needs. Currently on loan to my mother.

I'm asking, out of curiosity, and for a friend. It seems more and more people these days are abandoning the desktop concept.

Indeed I do still have mine! Although it's not that silent anymore, its fan makes a weird noise lately. I have ordered one from aliexpress, but it seem to be stuck in transit for almost a month now. Otherwise, it works fine! I have the RAM maxed out at 16 GB and I've installed a 4TB NVMe drive in it.

Although Intel does not make NUCs anymore, there are lots of options in the market if you're looking for one. You can look for ones with the N100 CPU or any N* series CPU for that matter. GMKtek, Beelink, HP and more make PCs in that form factor. I guess even refurbished Apple Mac Minis with Intel CPUs would be fine, although I haven't used one.

But be careful with RAM prices these days...

Thanks gapan! It sounds as though the presence of a fan (however notionally silent) may have been what put me off getting one of those, back then.

I actually do most of my computing on a ThinkPad with a Finnish keyboard, donated to me by the same friend. It has a fan, but not too loud - and the keyboard is incredible, for a laptop!

They don't make 'em like that any more.

Obviously it is no powerhorse, but Salix runs just fine

And the fan I had ordered finally arrived yesterday! Now I only need to find some time in the weekend to fit it in.
