You don't necessarily need swap on the USB stick. Just having swap somewhere on a drive of the host computer is enough.

This is a really interesting effect. Suspend (unlike hybrid suspend) is supposed to keep everything in memory/RAM. The system is just halted and put into a low power state (hd off, screen off/standby, cpu halted).
So I am wondering where the connection to the memory size is. Maybe it's a completely different issue or I just don't know.
Just out of curiosity: I assume you got 2x 1GB memory modules. You could not only try to put both or one of them in, but also swap the modules when you're using one.
So for memory module a and b:
ab a b
Another test to ensure there's nothing wrong with the memory controllers, could be putting them into different bays. But just if you want to, I'm only curious.

It is an eeepc -- it has only one memory bay so I can either put 1GB or 2GB card.

With 1GB it suspends OK, with 2GB it doesn't resume (no X, no keyboard respond etc).

Uptime (with 4-5 suspends during this time) is about 18h now, so I think hardware is OK :)
