So... Is Salix simply Slack in a new dress or is it different at a more fundamental level???
Nothing fundamental. If you wish to login in as root in Xfce, which is definitely *not* recommended, you simply have to activate a parameter (a simple check) in GDM connection configuration utility to allow administrator connection(this is deactivated by default in Salix).
Look in the menu under /system/window connection (or something like that, I'm not using an English environment)
Then under the tab: Security

If by "logon as root" you mean in a virtual console, then who's stopping you? If on the other hand you mean login as root in a graphical environment, stop doing that. Seriously.

What you meant to write was "but in Salix I don't know how to login as root". In which case my response is you shouldn't do it anyway.

If by "fundamental level" you mean it's not allowed to log in as root into a graphical environment, protecting unaware users from their own newbieness, then sure it is.
