Yes I did... selecting anything besides 'X Window System' makes parole hang.

So it has to be a problem with the DVD. I can't think of anything else. You could downloading the Big Buck Bunny DVD image, burn it to a DVD and try to play it. That one has no encryption. If it works, it means something with your DVD is weird.

edit: Ah, I see now that the Big Buck Bunny DVD iso is huge (7,5GB) and you probably don't have that kind of DVDs... You could try to create a non-encrypted DVD with Brasero though. Just create a video project and add a video file. Any short file should do.

I don't think it's a problem with the dvd because mplayer and vlc plays them correctly...

Let me say it again: it's probably something with with the DVD that makes gstreamer fail to play it. mplayer and vlc do not use gstreamer.
