No, that's not what I meant. It had nothing to do with you installing stuff manually. It is a shortcoming of my SLKBUILD which happens to work fine for me, but doesn't guarantee that it will always work in exactly the same way for every setup.

So what was different about my setup, if I scrupulously deleted everything I'd copied manually? Maybe I wasn't as scrupulous as I think

The xinitrc source file was not executable before building the package.
