I am pretty certain the problem I am seeing is related to my bios, or hardware failure. I have checked all of my live cd's that used to work fine, and they all shut down now. However this is also very strange. I just tried windows, and it shut down too. I can't remember if windows worked before I reset my bios, or if that was after.

Long sentence I know, does it make sense?

Sorry, I didn't even see your post before I posted.

I was thinking that could be the case as well, that is why I tried some of my old cd's. I even went back to some 2010 distributions, and they had the same problem. So I am thinking something on my computer has changed or is not working correctly. I tried testing my ram, but it seems good. I even tried taking out the ram, and running on just one 1GB stick, and tried them all out, and they all shutdown (I am not sure how much ram you need to suspend to ram, but since I was only using 150 MB, I figured 1GB should be enough?

Thanks for the help.

I found some possible information on this:
Yep, this is not a software issue. It's rather a hardware issue. I'm experiencing the same problem on two of my PCs after been running them well for over 3 years.

There can be a number of possible causes suitable for different MB/CPU or may be a combination of the causes, like

i) Specific hardware specially the MB has been used for many years (at least 3). The PC is heavily used and kept on for consecutive days together. The system just can't keep itself alive on low power state.

ii) Heavy dust and other particles have jammed CPU fan or clogged the heat-sink or IC

iii) MB battery is down, or power-supply is not able keep system alive at low-power state

iv) There're just too many add-on card or peripheral attached and MB is not able to keep the system up during sleep.

v) Environmental factor- too much/ too little humidity/temperature can cause such problems
The only think I can think of out of this list is to clean out my fan and heat sink. It is an older computer, and I do leave it on for consecutive days, but what does that mean?

Anyway, I will try cleaning things up tonight after work, and see if that helps.

Well I cleaned out the computer very well, and even reinstalled my bios and set it the default settings.

However it has not helped anything. I am starting to think something has failed (motherboard, power supply, or something else). I really liked having the sleep mode work, but it looks like I will not be able use it on this computer anymore. :(
