Finally, it's a problem with firefox not behaving with cups 1.4.4, which has been updated recently. And it somehow manages to come to surface only when certain gnome packages are installed. Going back to cups 1.4.3 (it's still available in slapt-get/gslapt) fixes it.

Great job, gapan. I think I'll remain without gnome-vfs and with cups 1.4.4.
gnome-vfs does not seem to be required by any program that i use, or, at least, they can use gvfs instead.
Thanks gapan!

P.S.: will u publish this information in the news?

and most importantly:
http://www.cups.org/str.php?L3606
and
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=606526

So, it seems to be a more general problem with firefox. I'm hoping we'll get yet another firefox update soon that fixes this.

I have built cups packages for version 1.4.3 that include the security fixes present in 1.4.4. I need to test drive them a bit, check if printing and everything else works with them, and I will upload them to the repositories, so everyone will "upgrade" to them.

Here they are for anyone that wants to give them a try now:

Look at this, gapan: http://live.gnome.org/GioPort
It seems that gnome-vfs is not used anymore almost at all.
I have removed the package without any effect since a couple of day.
Anyway I don't have installed gthumb, or cheese, or gnucash, or inkscape, or vlc (some the applications that you marked has having gnome-vfs as dependency)...

gnome-vfs is not actively maintained anymore and developers are suggested to write new applications with gvfs instead. But that doesn't mean that gnome-vfs is not used by several projects that haven't made the switch yet. gvfs is not a drop-in replacement for gnome-vfs.
