Setting up a VPN

Hi,

has anybody experience with setting up encrypted VPNs?
Basically I want to set up something like this:
Notebook (Win/Mac/Lin) --> VPN --internet-- VPN --> LAN

I know usually a router has to act as a VPN gateway, but I want my router only to port forward to a server in my LAN, which runs Linux and should act as VPN gateway.
The notebook needs access to two hosts in my LAN.

It should be possible to connect to the VPN from all major operating systems without much hassle.

So any suggestion what software I could use would be nice.
