Fonts - Subpixel hinting

I had the same problem (lcd 19", 1440x900), and the fonts in OpenOffice were even uglier. What I've done to improve the appearance:
Enable anti-aliasing
Hinting: slight
sub-pixel RGB
DPI = 96

The fonts look really better now.
