Salix is boring

Gentlemen,

I've been using Salix for six months now on both of my old laptops (Thinkpad T30 and Toshiba SatPro 4300), and it's boring. I switch them on and they just work, day after day, time after time, it's just the same old thing - successful booting and operation every time. Never a lock-up or a failure, just repeated, boring success.

Sometimes I sit and look at the lovely font rendering, or I try to remember the little queries I had when I first started using Salix, and I think just how good this is. It's an OS that I tried because I wanted something light yet fully-functional on these old machines and only Mandriva 2008.1 had delivered such success before (on the T30), and Salix worked superbly as soon as it was installed.

On both machines I chose the full install option because they have the hard drive space, and they have then had Kaffeine and all the KDE dependencies added because I watch TV on DVB-T occasionally. The extra disc space for KDE is not a problem as both machines have only light use and do not store large amounts of data.

13.0.2a was installed on both machines and neither has been updated once! I switched off the update notifier - so long ago I can't remember how - as soon as I saw that this OS worked so well, and I have not felt the need to change my mind since. This tells me that the level of quality control of the original release, and the Slackware it was based on, was very high. It is quite common for some of the larger and better-publicised Linux distributions (I name no names but U know who I mean) to release to a timetable rather than a quality threshold, which then causes so many of their users to have to work hard to fix problems that should not even be there.

I still use the very wonderful Mandriva on my main, desktop machine, as I have done for almost three years, but Mandriva's future is not looking too good right now. If it does fail, and I have to look for a replacement OS, then Salix will obviously be first in line.

So I just want to thank you all for the work you have done to adapt Slackware to create this excellent OS. Your efforts are noted and respected, and, as you will already know from many other posts on this website, gratefully received by the users of this remarkable, free system.

Thanks,

Nda

When I saw the headline only first, I though what nasty rant is this? :D ;)

But now:
Great, thanks for those nice words. :)
