Well, there`s a new kid on the block. I`m wondering if we are using it instead of OO soon...

LibreOffice is just the current name for the project but it could change.

AFAIK, the name OpenOffice is owned by Oracle since they recently acquired Sun but the developers have decided to separate themselves from the company (probably after seeing the fate of OpenSolaris).

Either way, this is just a name change because the same developers are working on the project and I doubt Oracle will want to market a closed source project called OpenOffice :)

It is too early to think about such a case.
We will see what this fork will bring up. Forks are generally great to keep development still ongoing, but sometimes they just die as quickly they were born.
For instance, see what happened to OpenSolaris/Illuminos, a little change of Oracle's strategy and there is no future any more for a parallel open source project ...

But LibreOffice has Red Hat, Canonical, Google and Novell behind them, should get enough money and different kind of support for the project.

Cant hardly wait for this one ;)

Some say now the office suite for linux is doomed, others contrary: it`s great, now when it`s free it will get a boost in development. Who knows?

Really, what are the basics for this opinion? (sounds strange to me)

Let's hope for a native GTK+ support (g.t.k. and nothing else, lol)

They claim that without a company behind it that pays its developers to work on it, the ofice suite will end with stagnation. Others tell that RedHat and Google will push it forward but are they gonna put much money into it?

I wonder why Google supports them? I'd have rather thought that Google will launch an online office suite some day.

They did it a long time ago :!:  Google Apps.
[Intentionally, I would not post a direkt link here for understandable reasons.]
