Xmarks will shut down

Post by damNageHack »

Maybe someone is interested or did not get the "important" mail.
It was a really great service (for free :!: ).
I do not understand their decision due to the huge publicity of the extension.
But maybe they are running out of capacity and now, they need more money to keep their things alive.
Business as usual :? :(
Dear Xmarks User,

We've always said we won't email you unless it's important; this is one of those occasions:

Xmarks will be shutting down our free browser synchronization services on January 10, 2011. For details on how to transition to recommended alternatives, consult this page[1].

For the full story behind the Xmarks shutdown, please read our blog post[2].

Thank you for being a part of the Xmarks community; we apologize for any inconvenience this step may cause you. We believe we have the best users in the world, and we hope your bookmarks find a new and happy home soon.

Asynchronously,

— The Xmarks Team

See SiteBar (GNU GPL) it is web-based, you can use it with any web browser. I used this server: uksystems.co.uk
I'm not using the so called "extension" of Firefox, Bookmark and mark "open in sidebar".
I used it with Opera on windows and Epiphany, I like to work with a sidebar for pages/references and the menu for bookmarklets.

Personally, I want a bookmark manager that can read/convert Midori (XBEL), Epiphany (RDF), Mozilla (SQLite) etc. etc. so Mozilla users won't be dependent on SQLite.

Why?
#1 because it is more private (offline)
#2 If you got a lot of bookmarks, you won't suffer from more RAM with your web browser.

I am going to give an attempt to those two addons:
* Siphon http://siphon-fx.com/
* FEBE http://customsoftwareconsult.com/extensions/
 http://www.taranfx.com/sync-firefox-addons-settings

To your request for a conversation tool. I can still not get your point.
XBEL seems to be the most common format used independently of any browser, so there are tools available to convert it into the browser's internally used format. Tags are not supported in every format, so e.g. Mozilla decided to store bookmars in a database (as well as Midori does so since version 0.2.7). another feature of using a database is to have dynamic bookmarks which could be reloaded every time (RSS/ATOM in a nice bookmarks menu, no need for Liferea or the feed sidebar of Midori any more then). Unfortunately and of course, each browser is using a different structure in its own database - that could be improved but it is very difficult because of incompatibility of features.
An easy solution is to decide which browser is your favourite one and administrate your bookmarks there.

I've found that page via News Feed of the project SiteBar:

SiteBar Plugins XBELSync 1.1 (3.3.7) released (Sat, 18 Feb 2006 17:29:50 GMT)
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownote ... _id=394584

Can that be usable with Midori?

+ Chipmark is also going to be end (so it seems)

Code: Select all

I'll post it here in case it will be deleted:

Why not give away this great project for people who really care and have time to work on it, instead of leaving all the fans waiting in desperation begging for your attention?

shame on you really
ChipsTest wrote:@greenpeace99, My dear friend,

I'm here (very disappointed) to help for this project to develop as much as possible, which should not be hard at all for coders/developers (especially if you're benefiting from it - academically)

I'm interested in this project because of many reasons, and one of them, the #1 FIRST on my list is OUR PRIVACY RIGHTS!
Right now, currently, we have a very strange phenomenon, that many people tend to use centralized Web Services to store all kinds of data and even ALL of their data, which may very well be a big danger, because after someone (a government, maybe?) will hack a way to the database of one user, it (he/she) will be able to get a "portrait" of the victim in an accuracy of 99.999...999%

We need projects of this kind, projects like Chipmark, SiteBar and some few others, but unfortunately, it is not enough (not many features)

Maybe, the real admins of this project are doing it deliberately, they maybe want to end this project forever, maybe they're acting in a very unorganized way, so it won't look like as if they didn't intend on finish this project.

Why? Bribe, and it could very well be!

See the "search engine" market, how many do we have? (less than 5 usable) Why? Corruption.
And how much privacy one can have? Almost NONE.

BTW: (search engines)
Startpage - https://startpage.com/
Ixquick - https://ixquick.com/
Scroogle - https://ssl.scroogle.org/
DuckDuckGo - https://duckduckgo.com/ (sadly enough, this project requires Javascript to be enabled which can reveal your pointer (cursor/mouse) behavior)

Why does Mozilla make use SO MUCH use of Javascript instead of CSS (in places where most of the features can be achieved with CSS) Why?
So it'll be easier for the web-admins to gather and track the behavior of the surfers, because you can detect the cursor places with Javascript.
At the very beginning the Mozilla Organization wanted to use Javascript as less as possible, and almost at any cost (but look what's going on now///)

Using your own Data Management tools on your independent server is NOT in accord to big business companies.

Just as using Jabber to communicate with a Jabber-Client only to communicate with all other proprietary networks.
You may use Independent (not centralized & non-big business company) Jabber Server OR install your own server (which is less than ~20 MB upload a day, meaning that you just need a domain address and you're set) with Getaways to AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, MySpace etc. to teach your server to communicate with other platforms.
And all you have is a anonymous Jabber account that is hard to track by big-government or by big-business

List of servers:
http://www.jabberes.org/servers/
http://coccinella.im/servers/servers_by_pubsub_pep.html

You may use your own server and hide yourself with Getaway that is installed in other server (e.g. http://jabme.de/)

I've downloaded the Chipmark source code many times and I got many copies and I'm getting ready for the big (and deliberate) collapse of this service.

Have fun, until then ;)
