Burning Salix Xfce Live ISO on a USB key

I recently wanted to have a live installation of Salix on a USB key so I downloaded the Xfce live ISO and, using UNetbootin under Windows, wrote it to a USB key. When I booted to the USB key Salix started but on boot I saw a message that the locale was undefined. X and Xfce started but input from the mouse and keyboard wouldn't work.

Instead I burned the ISO to a CD, booted from that, then used the LiveClone tool to write Salix to the same USB key. I must say that the tool was very easy to use and worked perfectly!

I first wanted to avoid burning an ISO to create a USB key but the second method worked OK. Is there a better method of getting the live ISO booting from a USB key without first burning the ISO to a CD and booting from it?

If you had read the documentation you would have known that unetbootin is not supported. There is a script in the iso that will do exactly what you want. Instructions are in the startup guide too.

gapan,

I'm embarassed, of course. I wasn't expecting UNetbootin to be supported, but was instead a "hackish" approach. I need to ask - which/what documentation should I have read before trying UNetbootin? When I click on the "Documentation" link on the Salix home page, it takes me to the wiki with links FAQ, User doc.. and Developer doc.. etc.

Regarding the Startup Guide I hadn't seen this mentioned anywhere. I just now did a Google Search and found that it's in the Salix folders. I then went back to the home page and searched for "startup" and "guide" but there are no hits. Can I suggest that this be added to the "Quicklinks" section, also mentioned explicitly in the introductory text.

I'll probably get a reply telling me that it was mentioned somewhere that I ought to have seen it. I can hardly wait.. :P

Before I "go", I need to thank you, gapan, for responding to my question so quickly.

:D

You will find the startup guide on the desktop of your preferred edition of the LiveCD an also here => http://guide.salixos.org/latest/

This guide is aimed generally with beginners in mind, but you will find a section on customizing the LiveCD which is more aimed to intermediate users.

In any case, please ensure you have the very latest version of the LiveCD available.

I made an entry in the Wiki. Now I hope it won't be missed ;-)

I haven't done this but since the installation discs use isolinux for the bootloader couldn't use isohybrid on the image then dd it to your USB stick?

Just a thought ;)

To everyone who replied, thankyou. JRD, thankyou also for including the ISO burning wiki entry.

As I see it, my problem was the chicken-and-egg scenario. The Startup guide, which I must say is excellent, was available from the desktop of the "Live CD". Included in that guide were instructions on how to put the LIve ISO onto a USB key. If I didn't have the Live CD running because I didn't know how to put it onto a USB key, then I couldn't find the guide and so...

If I am wrong, please correct me. I would strongly suggest that a link to the guide be more visible, perhaps on the home page, because it contains valuable information.
