Salix Forums

This is a really handy app to quickly launch apps, open directories or files, etc.
Its FilesAndFolders plugin is especially useful, letting you open a folder just typing a few letter of its name.
It works perfectly under XFCE.
I also tried kupfer that is very similar but it misses a FilesAndFolders plugin so my preference goes to gnome-do.

Yes, the fact that it uses mono seems to be it's main drawback and one reason why some people started to develop alternatives. But as long as these don't provide all functionnalities gnome-do provides, it would be great if gnome-do could work on Salix.

I have just compiled kupfer... this runs smoothly on my box. i like it a lot, and not many deps. thanks for sharing your thoughts. as for gnome-do, perhaps and perhaps. i think there is a real chance if gnome edition is coming out for Salix in the future, but as it is right now, i think the package has just too many gnome deps which are newer than the current slackware stable.

note that you need to install mono, mono-addins, gnome-keyring-sharp, gnome-sharp, gtk-sharp, ndesk-dbus, ndesl-dbus-glib, notify-sharp, all available from slackware gsb. I have glib 2.24 installed (for shotwell... another great application). it's ok if you know what you are doing, but upgrading glib without thinking might cause some serious problems.

Just noticed: kupfer can do something Files and Folders can do. move, copy, rename... etc. just using tab. or am i missing out something?

About your last question, yes kupfer can perform operation on files and folders like gnome-do, the difference is - unless I missed something myself - that it can't index them from their names so it won't find all files and folders, while gnome-do can index for example my home folder at a chosen depth and find immediately any corresponding file and folder from their name, typing a few letters of it.
Anyway, if gnome-do does not fully work, that will be already great to have kupfer, thanks a lot !
I just installed it and it seems to work fine !

I also noticed another program that seems to index properly all folders, unlike kupfer : synapse. It is very fast and don't seem to have as many dependencies as gnome-do. Only zeitgeist.

Finally, I found one program in Salix repositories that almost fits my needs to quickly access directories : it's launchy ! It's not perfect :
- not translated in my language - french - (so when I search an application, I have to guess its english description !)
- the catalog is not rebuilt at each file or folder change but periodically
but it's good enough for what I need.

Thanks, but the translation problem I mentioned was about launchy (maybe my message was confusing).

Forgive me, but it seems strange that you sould have to 'guess' when you speak such good English in this thread.
