This is an un-bug, to coin a phrase. At least, I found with earlier versions of Salix that right-clicking on suitable files and choosing to open them with Parole opened Parole, but not the file, which still needed to be opened as if one had started from the app and not the file.

Probably should have reported this

Not sure if this also applies to music, because it's been a while since I've used GUI apps for that.

PS: IIRC you can watch movies with MPlayer's ASCII output plugin on console

mplayer for music. Actually, I should have more accurately said that's also what I use for watching videos that are files. I only recently discovered how to give an actual DVD as an argument to mplayer (for now I forget again, but /// appears in there somewhere) but the right click functionality with parole is (should be) the same. And you can do really cool things such as

mplayer /Mozart_piano_sonatas/*5*mp3

which plays all the sonatas whose Köchel number contains a five - like random but you get complete sonatas not jumbled movements à la Classic FM.

When you mention ASCII output, are you by any chance suggesting that I am becoming over-zealous about the command line?

Within five minutes, there was Laura Palmer's corpse. The only thing that doesn't work that well is subtitles.

Looks like there's even a colour version:

Now why would anyone want to *do* that?

EDIT

The really weird thing is, when I turn the electric light on in my office, mplayer's ASCII output freezes (P twice unfreezes it, or right arrow once). This must be because the wiring is dodgy. But it doesn't happen with normal video output.
