Can't print

I have a HP Deskjet 5940. This has been set up using hp-setup, using a 5900-series driver, but I can't actually print.

If I try to print from gedit, xfprint pops up and only offers the option of printing to a file in postscript format.

If I try to print from OpenOffice, it offers "generic printer" (where older versions used to name the printer and offer the option of printing to a file). If I select that, I get "error while printing".

What am I doing wrong?

have you set up the printers through "manage printing" under "System".
