New to Salix; A few Qs...

I've been using Linux for about 11 years. Everything from Debian to Fedora to Arch, etc, etc. I am now interested in Salix to use as my main desktop OS. (From the KDE Live CD) It looks well branded, polished, lot of effort put into it, and I love the feel of it, its really fast.
My question are more with regards to packages. I noticed in gslapt, a few packages seem 'older' than I would like them to be. Is there a Salix repo (or Slackware as I noticed its backwards compatable) that I could use to get a few more 'updated packages'?
My other question is. How stable is Salix for general work (I am a web dev) so I would be looking to use this for all my projects, I know Slackware is awesome for stability (so I herd), but is this true?
Thanks and keep up the good work!!
