Building salix packages?

Hi,
I intend to install salix on my old dell laptop. My main problem will be building packages from source and from archives created by rpm2targz.
I have rpms for my printer driver and there are a few packages that I will need to build from source including python based packages (mnemosyne). I don't want to install anything unless it's a package that I can remove using normal package management- so './configure, make & make install' is not really an option.
Is there a more comprehensive guide for building packages for Salix?
Does checkinstall work with Salix?
Can slackware 13.1 packages be used with Salix?
Thanks for any advice,
David
