No sound in Parole, XFCE 13.37 64-bit.

Greetings.

I'm a bit of a n00b, certainly with Salix and while not entirely n00bish with *nix, I wouldn't say I'm proficient with it either.

I've done a full installation of Salix XFCE 13.37 64 bit and do not hear sound when playing DVDs with Parole. Video is fine.

1. This problem exists with several commercial movie DVDs.
2. It does not exist with audio CDs, which play fine.
3. I have used "Install multimedia codecs" to install encumbered codecs.
4. I have run Alsa sound care installation (using HDA Intel sound card, have tried other choices presented by the Alsa installer, but no help).
5. Finally, I have read the FAQ/Wiki, searched the forum (problem seems to have existed with others, but couldn't find a solution posted), and googled "Salix parole 'no sound'"). No help.

I'm perfectly willing to believe I'm making some n00b mistake, but that's the trouble with being a n00b ... one does that kind of thing. :)

Anyone have suggestions?

thanks,

Svejk

1. First check your settings in alsamixer
2. Do you have sound at youtube.com or when playing mp3 (not Audio-CD)?

1. First check your settings in alsamixer
With respect, should I be looking for anything in particular? I am listening through headphones and do have that option selected. It's just a checkbox in the GUI, but when I run alsamixer from a terminal <Headphon> shows a small square with 00 and no ... not sure what to call it ... "slider" ? ... as the other parameters have. I can select <Headphon> with the right arrow key, but it does not respond to anything else. Don't know if that's normal or not.

My card [HDA_intel] is on the supported list.

I did go to the alsa site at opensrc.org (no permission to post URLs or I would) and poke around a bit, but honestly I don't understand much of what I'm reading there. I have experience playing "rat in a Skinner box" with unfamiliar software, but would prefer to avoid as much of that as possible. :)

I can play a .wav with the aplay command from a terminal, per the first suggestion in the Troubleshooting section of the site above. Trying the speaker test command gives "command not found".

I have found and looked at the Takashi PDF with his presentation slides, but could not follow a good deal of it.
2. Do you have sound at youtube.com or when playing mp3 (not Audio-CD)?
I can play mp3s with no trouble.

As to youtube, I am using 64-bit, so I get a black square and an invitation to upgrade Flash. I've searched the forum on that topic and despair of any solution, but I don't use youtube much anyway. I did try switching to the html5 option at youtube (per suggestion here) and got sound that way, but at the moment Flash is more bother than I care about (I browse with Opera, FWIW). Would be glad to try anything that would help troubleshoot.

Thanks for any assistance, and

regards,

Svejk

I can play mp3s with no trouble.
OK, the good thing first: your sound card works fine and you don't have to worry about your alsamixer settings.
The problem may be on of those:
1. The file format you want to play is not supported by parole
2. Your parole or GStreamer settings are wrong

As I don't have access to parole or GStreamer settings now I canot tell what you can change there. I suggest you try an alternative video player (e.g. vlc, xine, smplayer).

So, the situation seems to be that in Salix 13.37 x64 XFCE, after running the pre-installed update script to obtain the recommended codecs set, the default media player (parole):

1. may not support playback of commercial DVD movies, or,

2. may have incorrect settings out of the box in a clean install. Or maybe it's the player's framework.

The solution is "don't use the default media player".

All-righty, then. Thanks for your help.

Hi Svejk

sarcasm will get you everywhere! Or is that nowhere, I always get those mixed up. I think the operative word in the reply by thenktor is "now", "I don't have access...now". Also trying another player may help in moving towards a solution.

This may depend on your sound hardware, e.g. if it outputs the 5.1 ac3/dts audio stream on a S/PDIF output you won't hear anything with headphones.
