gam_server eating 100% cpu

From time to time a computer of mine gets choked by gam_server running 100% cpu. I`m not sure when that happens but this machine is extensively connected remotely (NFS, VNC, SFTP, SCP, HTTP)
I wonder what is this gam_server for? I`ve been looking on the web and many users have similiar problems. How to get rid of this issue?
[EDIT] So far I`m trying this solution (I do hope it`s gonna work):

Since no one has responded I will
Can you show your "/etc/gamin/gaminrc"
AFAIK, if you do not have all the filesystems you use in this file, then gamin will poll anything not in this file like a million times a second(or whatever the default setting is).
The homepage for Gamin is:
http://www.gnome.org/~veillard/gamin/
WIKI:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamin
There are many applications that require the use of a FAM, in this case gamin. Some include Samba, ktorrent, thunar, compiz, amarok, koffice etc...
Here is my "/etc/gamin/gaminrc" to compare:
# configuration for gamin
# Can be used to override the default behaviour.
# notify filepath(s) : indicate to use kernel notification
# poll filepath(s) : indicate to use polling instead
# fsset fsname method poll_limit : indicate what method of notification for the filesystem
# kernel - use the kernel for notification
# poll - use polling for notification
# none - don't use any notification
#
# the poll_limit is the number of seconds
# that must pass before a resource is polled again.
# It is optional, and if it is not present the previous
# value will be used or the default.
#notify /mnt/local* /mnt/pictures* # use kernel notification on these paths
#poll /tmp/* /var/* # use poll notification on these paths
# A safe default is to poll filesystems once every 15 seconds:
fsset btrfs poll 15
fsset cifs poll 15
fsset ext2 poll 15
fsset ext3 poll 15
fsset ext4 poll 15
fsset hfs poll 15
fsset hfsplus poll 15
fsset iso9660 poll 15
fsset jfs poll 15
fsset nfs poll 15
fsset nfs4 poll 15
fsset ntfs poll 15
fsset ntfs-3g poll 15
fsset ocfs2 poll 15
fsset reiserfs poll 15
fsset udf poll 15
fsset vfat poll 15
fsset xfs poll 15
Hope this somewhat helps you out.

Thanks for the reply. That`s exactly what I`m trying to do: I created /etc/gamin/gaminrc and defined how often to poll filesystems but you remind me that I also should define a policy for NFS. Thanks.
By the way: Couldn`t Salix installation provide the file /etc/gamin/gaminrc by default with reasonable values?

You could probably ask its package maintainer directly.
