[SOLVED] help identifying HDD, CPU and M/B temperatures.

Post by Dennola4 »

Google isn't giving me any conclusive answers. I have three separate temperature readings.

1) $ sbin/hddtemp /dev/sda

Code: Select all

/dev/sda: WDC WD800BEVE-22UYT0 : 44°C
2) $ cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/temperature

Code: Select all

46°C
3) $ sensors

Code: Select all

dennis[~]$ sensors
acpitz-virtual-0
Adapter: Virtual device
temp1: +45.5°C (crit = +99.0°C)
Obviously #1 is HDD temp. My guess is that the other two are M/B temp and CPU temp. The question is, which is which?

Code: Select all

dennis[~]$ cat /etc/sensors3.conf
# libsensors configuration file
# -----------------------------
#
# This default configuration file only includes statements which do not
# differ from one mainboard to the next. Only label, compute and set
# statements for internal voltage and temperature sensors are included.
#
# In general, local changes should not be added to this file, but rather
# placed in custom configuration files located in /etc/sensors.d. This
# approach makes further updates much easier.
#
# Such custom configuration files for specific mainboards can be found at
# http://www.lm-sensors.org/wiki/Configurations

Hello Dennola4,

Just my personal tidbit. I am no expert, take my words lightly.
Well from my understanding,
Dennola4 wrote:

The other two are both CPU. ACPI "/proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/temperature" is what was set in the kernel. And sensors is a seperate package that when you run

Code: Select all

sensors-detect
is the process of scanning your system for various hardware monitoring chips, or sensors, supported by libsensors(3). Also looking in "/etc/sensors.conf" might give you an insight to what sensors is reading. And as a note, I believe that why you see 2 different temps for "CPU" is the way the ACPI or sensors formulate the equation to human-readable temps.

In all, every M/B and hardware configuration is different, so knowing what you have and search for that might give you better clues than what I have to offer.
Hope that if anything, this reply helps on your understanding of this problem.

your explanation seems plausible, so I'm going to mark this solved. HOWEVER, if anyone has knowledge which contradicts this explanation please correct us so that others reading this thread aren't misinformed. Thanks.
